HRSA Board Composition: Defining Healthcare Industry

For Chapter 20, Board Composition, do I have to define “health care industry”?

In both the HRSA Compliance Manual and the Site Visit Protocol, it is required for the health center to provide a definition for “health care industry” when determining if non-patient board members earn more than 10 percent of their annual income from the health care industry. Without this definition, during the operational site visit (OSV), it may not be possible for the Administrative/Governance reviewer to answer the question. The health center determines what the definition of the health care industry is. For example, “health care industry” may be defined as those individuals who are doctors, nurse practitioners or dentists. It is important that whichever definition is provided by the health center, this should be documented either in a governance policy or within a health center’s bylaws.
